چکیده

If the bene ciary of an altruist's gift can be expected to use this gift e ciently, then a pure altruist (one who cares about the bene ciary's utility level, but not how utility is obtained) should only give gifts of money. This is often interpreted to mean that any other type of gift is evidence of paternal altruism. However, it is known (Linbeck and Weibull (1988)) that altruism creates an incentive for ine cient consumption in a multiperiod model. Working within this context, I demonstrate that it can be optimal for a pure altruist to give certain types of gifts in kind. For example, a gift in kind of education increases the bene ciary's future income, which can prevent the type of strategic behavior which leads to ine ciency in Linbeck and Weibull (1998.) Intra-Household Redistribution under Gender-Asymmetric Altruism

Mother or Child? Intra-Household Redistribution under Gender-Asymmetric Altruism In developing societies, social norms typically ascribe differential weights to paternal, maternal and communal (or state) contributions to children’s expenses. Individuals internalize these valuations. I examine a Cournot model of voluntary contribution to children’s goods in a two-adult household, where both spou...

Hamilton's rule and kin competition: the Kipsigis case

Evolutionary studies of human behavior have emphasized the importance of kin selection in explaining social institutions and fitness outcomes. Our relatives can nevertheless be competitors as well as sources of altruism. This is particularly likely when there is local competition over resources, where conflict can lead to strife among nondispersing relatives, reducing or even negating the effec...

Rochester Tough Love and Intergenerational Altruism

This paper develops and studies a tough love model of intergenerational altruism. We model tough love by modifying the Barro-Becker standard altruism model in two ways. First, the child’s discount factor is endogenously determined, so that low consumption at young age leads to a higher discount factor later in her life. Second, the parent evaluates the child’s lifetime utility with a constant h...

Non-reciprocal Altruism and the Evolution of Paternal Care

Why do males in some species contribute to offspring care, while in others males have very little involvement with females and their offspring, beyond conception? This paper addresses this question using a combination of theoretical biology, genetic computation, game theory and data from living primates. Because of the heavy energetic demands of gestation, lactation and offspring care, studies ...

The Associations between Perceived Parenting Styles, Empathy, and Altruistic Choices in Economic Games: A Study of Chinese Children

Parenting styles are critical for fostering children's empathy and prosociality. Yet these relations haven't been well established for Chinese children, and the underlying mechanisms were seldom explored. Drawing upon parental acceptance-rejection theory and empathy-altruism hypothesis, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between perceived parenting styles and altru...
